Spirit Animal Bat
Gifts: Radical change in perspective. Finding your way through the dark. Roosting and hibernating. Clairaudience or clairvoyance. Creativity and propagating creativity. Timing.
Challenges: Confusion. Muddled thinking. Flying into obstacles. Being stuck.
Bat has been a frequently misunderstood creature throughout history and mythology. Much of the misperception has come from physical bat’s elusive nocturnal behavior and the gruesome associations of blood-sucking. Of course, out of the numerous species of bats, only vampire bats actually feed on blood. Most bats eat insects or fruit and, rather than being life-sucking, are actually life-giving for their role in pollination.
Bat’s most prominent gift is the offer of a radical change in perspective. Imagine what the world looks like to Bat when it is hanging upside down in its cave or from a tree. Remember how your view of the world changed when you did headstands as a child—or maybe still do. When you feel stuck on a problem or frustrated with a situation, let go of your current perspective. Let go of what you believe, what you think, and what you think you know. Turn the world—or yourself—on its head and see how it changes.
If you’re having a difficult time reorienting yourself, borrow Bat’s ability to find its way through the dark. The lesson for you is to remember that you can find your way. Light or dark, right side up or upside down, you can be spinning blindly in zero gravity and find a way through. Trust your senses, your intuition, your multi-dimensional vision. Bat teaches that vision doesn’t form just through the eyes; it forms through eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin, gut, and soul.
Some bats have poor eyesight and use echolocation to navigate in the dark. Other bats have heightened visual acuity. Be open to receive information from any internal conduit. You may experience moments of clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing) or clairsentience (clear knowing). Bat reminds you not to reject knowingness simply because it came to you from within.
A challenge of working with spirit animal Bat is confusion and muddled thinking. Too much Bat and you may not see what’s right in front of you. Too little Bat, and you struggle to see in spite of already knowing. Bat teaches you to trust your knowingness. If you reject knowingness for concrete “proof,” you need more Bat energy. Doing inverted yoga poses can help. Mediate on Bat, imagining yourself hanging upside down in a bat cave. Yes, even imagining yourself as Batman can help build your trust in your own knowingness.
Rejecting Bat energy can make you less adept at avoiding or overcoming obstacles. Fly around “blind as a bat” and you’ll fly right into the obstacles you’re trying to avoid. The obstacles aren’t there to stop you as much as they are there to remind you to use all of your gifts. If Bat is your spirit animal, you must employ your gift of vision—all sources of vision.
