Like Butterfly, Moth is a symbol of transformation and perfect timing. But there are significant differences between spirit animal Moth and spirit animal Butterfly. Moth is nocturnal, which blesses Moth with an entirely distinct set of gifts.
Moth offers the gifts of seeing in the dark and finding the least bit of light. When you are feeling overwhelmed by darkness and difficulty, use Moth to help you see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, the light might not be at the end of the tunnel. It might be somewhere else, somewhere unexpected. Moth is excellent at detecting and following even the tiniest hint of light.
Moth’s connection to the Moon confers the gifts of intuition, psychic awareness, and dreamtime answers. Moth can intuitively find the light, even when others may not notice it. This translates into the gifts of optimism and faith. Use these gifts to see your waythrough the darkness, not to deny the darkness. Remember that Moth brings an understanding that the least bit of light is enough and a faith that the light is out there, nearer than you may think. Moth isn’t looking for more and more light. It’s not trying to escape the dark.
This is essential to remember. Moth does not say, “To banish the dark, simply turn on the light.” No, there is nothing wrong with the dark. Without the dark, there would be no Moth. Moth teaches you to own the dark while using light as a tool for navigation, not an escape hatch.
The shadow side of Moth is blind faith, following a false light, or seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. Instead of accepting the darkness around you, you seek to flood it out with more light. Desperate to escape pain or discomfort, you may follow the first light you see, even if it leads you to a destination you don’t want.
Moth offers the gifts of camouflage and adaptability. Many moths have wing coloring and patterns that allow them to blend into—virtually disappearing against—the background. This protects them from nocturnal predators, such as owls. Use this gift of camouflage for protection or for judiciously moving into a group where you feel some hesitation. Be careful not to remain invisible, not to blend in so much that you lose yourself.
We have seen Moth’s adaptability very clearly when Peppered Moths evolved from primarily white in color to dark grey/black and back again over the course of 200 years because of the pollution caused by and cleaned up from the Industrial Revolution. This gift of adaptability is very helpful in managing the very common fear of change. You can handle change gracefully—in any direction. Moth can show you the way.
